working with charities and in communities

" I have walked the long walk to freedom. I have tried not to falter. I've made mistakes along the way. But I have discovered the secret that, after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me; to look back at the distance I have come. But, I can only rest here for a moment; for with freedom comes responsibility. And I dare not linger, for my long walk has not yet ended"

Nelson Mandela - Last paragraph from A long walk to freedom.

LAUREUS - SPORT FOR GOOD FOUNDATION

Laureus is well known for hosting the Oscars of Sports each year, in which the world's elite sportsmen and women get recognized for their achievements. In 2011 Rafael Nadal walked away with individual honours and the Spanish Soccer side the team award.

But most of Laureus' work is done by supporting projects which use sport as a medium to promote healthy lifestyles, fun, friendship and personal development - particularly in communities where there is a dearth of facilities and coaching.

Deshun has worked with Laureus since . She is one of 22 South African ambassadors who are used to inspire children to reach for their goals. Fellow ambassadors include Bryan Habana, Lucas Radebe, Natalie Du Toit, Sean Pollock and Desiree Ellis.

FEEDBACK FROM THE PROJECTS

 Hi Deshun

It was a great pleasure chatting to you after your presentation to my Social Entrepreneurship Certificate Programme class at GIBS a couple of weeks ago. I was inspired by your tale of your endeavours on Everest, and how the lessons you learnt could apply to the rest of us in our own contexts. You show great insight and understanding of human nature in relating what happens in... the process of climbing a mountain to everyday life. Having heard you speak before at a Laureus event, I still found you fresh, energetic, witty and with a lot of passion for your subject matter.

All the best for your endeavours.

Best regards,
