Kilimanjaro diary - pics!

Here are the pics received so far - none of summit day yet but that could be because the weather was so atrocious.

Tuesday morning - the 1st climbing day
Looking great in their pink 1st for Women t-shirts the team pass through the rain forest early on Tuesday morning.
Everyone would have been feeling anxious and unsure of what challenges lay ahead.   "Can I really do this?" at the forefront of the mind.   The competition winners were finally getting to try out their new gear.

Rongai route passes through 3 or 4 different vegetation belts each with their own appeal.
The rain forest is Jan's favourite and it's easy to see why.

Wednesday, 2nd climbing day
Breakfast at Simba Camp
The group were amazed to be getting toast for breakfast on a mountain!
In their daily notes several of the team have praised the food on the expedition.
Lots of carbs provided the fuel necessary for the climbers to continue on the uphill climb and, fortunately, it seems the meals on offer exceeded expectations which is great because poor food on top of being sore, tired and cold would have made for an extremely grumpy 1st for Women Kilimanjaro group!

Wednesday, 2nd climbing day
Taking to the trail from Simba camp.
The 7hr uphill slog to 3rd cave had each team member digging deep just to put one foot ahead of the other.   Even the 1st time hikers managed to keep going - testament to their resolve to keep going.   In her daily notes Bonnita described it as "helluva day!" and it must've come as a bit of a shock to the climbers after the relatively easy hike the previously day.
Lots of encouragement, team spirit and "pole pole" spurred them on and they all made it to camp and fell into their tents knowing that the next day was a rest day.

Thursday, rest day:
The hike to 4200m.
After only 2 climbing days they're already above the clouds and no one's wearing shorts anymore!
After the hike they returned to camp for lunch and then to relax until the following morning when they would depart for Kibo camp from where they would begin the climb to the top of Kili.

Keep visiting us - more pics to follow as they come in!

Thanks to all our friends, family and supporters who kept us going and cheered for us from a distance. 1st For Women has organised an evening for the team to get together and take a walk down memory lane in the next few weeks. i can't wait to see you all again! Friendships have been formed and bonds fortified, how extraordinary you all are! I'm writing an article for Oprah magazine on the trip and everything has come flooding back...I am so grateful and i love you all.
