Training schedule
Paradoxically, although one needs to be strong and fit to climb mountains, climbing high altitude mountains must be done very slowly. Speed at high altitudes can kill so the acclimatisation process is slow and measured with plenty of rest days to allow the body to adjust.
Acclimatisation to high altitudes has very little to do with fitness or physical strength - the slower you go the better the body acclimatises and the less problems you should have with the altitude.
Deshun follows a strict training regime
MONDAYS TO FRIDAYS: Gym for 2 hours a day concentrating on cardio, lower body and core body strength
SATURDAYS: Several loops of the steep, uneven (and thoroughly exhausting!) Westcliff stairs
Deshun participates in the annual Sport Hero's Walk against HIV/AIDS which was started by Cynthia Tshaka in 2002. The 2006 event saw groups of sports people walk from Pretoria to Mafikeng and in 2007 from Gauteng to the Eastern Cape. The 2008 walk began in Soweto and ended 15 days later in Kimberley on Dec 1, World Aids Day.
In addition Deshun participates annually in the annual Discovery/702 Walk the Talk.
